Pressure Cooker Vs Slow Cooker: Which One Should You Buy in 2021?
Life Before 2020
Someone: I am not very sure as to which appliance is very helpful and which one I should buy? Should I buy a pressure cooker or slow cooker?
Me: What? Pressure Cooker? Slow Cooker? What are you even talking about? You mean to say you cook? Do you not buy food from restaurants? Do you not order food? You know what, it is not that one wanting to get a cooker that shocks me actually; it is the fact that there are people who know too much and are trying to decide between two appliances? What difference is either of the cookers going to make when you spend most of the time eating out? (Man, people are too confusing)
Life After 2020 (Post Lockdown)
Someone: I am not very sure as to which appliance is very helpful and which one I should buy? Should I buy a pressure cooker or slow cooker?
Me: Well, You sure have asked that to the right person. So you see, first you need to know the differences between the two.... (And the never-ending-answer to which is the right cooker goes on!)
It is 2021! And what do we keep saying to ourselves?
New Year, new beginning, new resolutions, new adventure, new change for a new me.
But how is life actually going on for people all over the world? Have things changed? Is it the same, ‘new year, new beginning, new resolutions, new adventure, new change for a new me’ kind of lifestyle? The one thing that has brought in changes to a lot of things; be it work, studies or the lifestyle in general is to learning to live amidst restrictions.
‘With restrictions comes creativity’, ‘restrictions make people rebel’ are known lines, but I guess the life after 2020 quote has to be ‘Restrictions has made everyone a cooking expert. Restrictions have made people try out new recipes and have healthy home cooked foods. Restrictions have made people experiment different cooking methods. (Yes, that’s me. Well, stepping into the kitchen and trying to cook, did help me know what my kitchen needs!) And now that everybody cooks, it is time you know which appliance will be the right one for you.
Pressure Cooker vs Slow Cooker: Which one should you buy in 2021?
Slow Cooker
A slow cooker is an electrical cooking appliance that has less modes/settings and that comes with limited accessories. If you think, an appliance with fewer modes and very less accessories to use does not sound like a very useful appliance then hear me out.
A slow cooker cooks food at relatively low temperatures for a longer period. There are two different types of slow cookers, one that has three modes and the other has two. The appliance mostly comes with low, high and keep warm mode, if it is going to be a cooker with two settings then it is cook and keep warm mode.
What to do?
A slow cooker comes with a pot and a lid. Cooking is simple with a slow cooker. All you have to do is to select one of the three/two options and come back anytime, even hours later to enjoy a good cooked food.
- Add the ingredients to the pot
- Add liquid
- Close the pot with the lid
- Switch to cook mode or choose low or high settings
• Low setting – It takes 6 to 8 hours for the food to cook
• High setting – It takes 4 to 6 hours for the food to cook.
Once the food is cooked, the cooker automatically switches to the keep warm mode.
Why buy a slow cooker?
If you are looking out to save time and energy, an appliance to relieve you from cooking stress and make your cooking convenient then go for slow cookers. With slow cookers, time is never a problem. Let’s say you put your ingredients in the cooker in the morning, you leave it all day and you return back at night, normally you would think that would be a problem but with slow cookers, it is not. You don’t have to worry about leaving your cooker on for hours with food in it, you don’t have to worry about the timer to be set and you don’t have to even to know the cooking time for the food that you cook. Anytime you come, your cooker will give ready-to-eat hot food.
Why not to buy a slow cooker?
- Dominance of spices - The longer you leave your food in the cooker, the longer the flavour of the spices added begins to overpower your dish.
- Not ideal for instant meals – If you are looking out to have a meal prepared within a short duration, then slow cookers are not the right choice.
- Not for all recipes – Adding multiple ingredients like meat and vegetables, might give you uneven results with one being overcooked than the other. Extra work of pre-cooking certain ingredients will be required to get your dish perfect.
Pressure Cooker
Electric Pressure cookers have multiple settings and pre-set menus. You don’t have to know science and technology to use an instant pot but all you need is to choose the pre-set menus available and let the appliance do its work.
Pressure cookers are the right choice when it comes to times where you would love to have hot, instant meals. You get to set the temperature, timer and the cooking mode and as time goes, the temperature rises and the pressure builds to cook the food faster.
What to do?
- Add the ingredients
- Add the right quantity of water
- Close the lid tight
- Set the temperature
- Choose one of the cooking modes or select any one of the pre-set menus
- Choose a pressure release method
- Set the timer
Once the timer starts, based on the cooking mode that you select or the pre-set option that you select, the electric pressure cooker begins to function. And during the process of cooking, it is important the pressure build inside the cooker is release either manually or automatically. Once the cooking is done, the cooking stops and timer will indicate you.
